granting same-sex couples all the same rights as heterosexual couples but not calling it marriage is like making black people ride in separate cars, drink from separate water fountains, or use separate bathrooms from white people, as it was before the civil rights movement. black people would get the same rights (supposedly), but were denied complete equality with white people because they were not allowed to use the same facilities.

that was called "separate but equal" which was not really separate and def not equal... i have heard some conservatives use those exact words when discussing same-sex couples and i think that highlights their obliviousness.
also, i tend to forget that the diff between 'civil union' and 'marriage' is not just semantics, as i think so many believe. there are important limitations on what someone who is a 'civil partner' can do compared to a husband or a wife. esp in the case of a sick or dying loved one, the 'real' family members would still be free to trump the wishes of the partner.
furthermore, it disgusts me that some of us heteros cling to this concept of marriage, saying it's a sacred bond between 'one man and one woman', when this country is pushing a 60% divorce rate... to me, it is the same hypocrisy that, ultimately, stems from lack of proper separation of church and state.
